Yard Sale Madness

I had my epic yard sale today and, while I made a good bit of money, I didn’t sell even half of my stuff. Now I’ve got a mere 5 days before I leave and a townhouse that is STILL full of stuff!  Lesson learned? Have your yard sale at least 2 weeks before you leave to give yourself a little extra time to sell everything.

I’m still thinking positive thoughts…and taking action to get rid of everything else.  I’ve flooded craigslist with awesome pictures and detailed descriptions, posted on my facebook wall, and called/emailed everyone who contacted me prior to the yard sale.  Send me good vibes!

website design?

So, as you may or may not have noticed, I’ve been playing around with how my website looks recently and I’d really like to know what you guys think about it.  Something just seems off to me, like it’s not balanced, but I can’t put my finger on it, probably because I’m so close to it.

Just to kind of give you an idea of the vibe I’m going for…I’m not a cutesy kind of person so floral patterns or all pink just isn’t me. I’m attracted to natural elements (well, duh, ECOtourism) so that’s why I picked the wood, but I’m not married to it.  The pic is one that I took, and while I love it, I don’t think it’s right for this.  I dig the vibe of an old passport covered with stamps and stains or a retro safari travel journal, but I don’t want it to be too dated.  The only thing that I love about the look right now is the font of Green Eyes, Gypsy Soul.  I’m pretty artistic and that script just speaks to me…not to girly, not to clinical.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Criticism? I’m open to it all!

To move, to bre…

To move, to breathe, to fly, to float
To gain all while you give,
To roam the roads of lands remote:
To travel is to live.

The other day, I went to pick up my check from the catering company I work for.  As usual, I spent a few minutes shootin the shit with the office girls.  I asked how the training was going (we have a new office girl), they asked me how the trip planning was going, etc.  One asked “now, how long are you going to be gone?”  I answered “About 3 years”.  “Oh, really?? How does that happen? How does a trip like that happen?” Awkward pause…”You make it happen.”

The owner, who just happened to be there, stopped what he was doing, looked back, and quite forcefully asked “What??”  I nervously looked him in the eye and reiterated “You make it happen. It doesn’t just happen to you, you make it happen.” He stared me down for a moment, before offering his hand, shaking mine, and saying “Good for you. Congratulations. You are going to have a great time. Best of luck to you.”

It’s moments like those, when someone recognizes the work you’ve put into making your dreams come true, the sacrifices you’ve made and how difficult it has been without you even having to put anything into words, that validates everything you’ve been trying to do.

Not that I need validation…but it’s nice to get it every once in a while when you’re feeling like the people you care about just aren’t getting you.  That brief encounter has relit the fire under my ass and I am now ready to tackle the rest of the preparations for my trip.

freak out

I’ve been really bad lately, neglecting my blog. 😦 I think it’s because as this trip draws near, I’m getting so overwhelmed by everything that still has to be done that I try to put things off and not think about them.  Which of course makes everything 10x worse.  What I really need to do is get focused and push on through.  I can take a breather when I’m in London, chillin at my friend’s flat.  Until then, I need to go Go GO! if I want to get everything done.  No more excuses Kat! (yes, I’m giving myself a pep talk)

Here’s a list of what needs to be done by August 28th.

1.  Buy my plane ticket from the US to London (oops, I was supposed to do that weeks ago…)

2.  Sell my computer

3. Buy an ipad mini and learn how to use it

4.  Have a yard sale and sell an apartment’s worth of furniture, etc.

5.  Finalize my europe plans

6.  Get the rest of my vaccines

7.  Close my current checking account and open one through Charles Schwab (no atm fees!)

8.  Spend as much time as humanly possible with my family and friends

9.  Keep updating my blog/figure out how to post video blogs

10.  Sell my moped

11.  Settle up everything in need of settling (utilities, townhouse rental, health insurance, jobs, bank accounts, legal stuff, etc)

Ok, I’m sure there is more, but this is what I could think of off the top of my head.  You are probably thinking one of two things.  Either a) Wow that is a lot to do, you’re never going to get all that done or b) That’s not so much, why are you whining you big baby.

My rebuttal to both is it’s not a lot of tasks to complete (if I could actually focus), but it is a lot to deal with emotionally because I’m basically ending my current life and starting a brand new one.

That being said, I know I can do this. And the end result is worth it…life on my own terms.

Freak out averted.
